The Balanced Fund Problem

Balanced funds exist for one reason: they are designed to combine growth assets and income exposures in a single portfolio, allowing investors to participate in long-term market appreciation without absorbing the full volatility of an all-equity portfolio. They’re often used as a catch-all allocation, built to be broadly acceptable.

Today, “balanced” often means staying close to average. Many balanced funds are designed to avoid standing out and typically don’t deliver meaningful results. That is not a flaw in execution. It is the product.

The financial equivalent of an over-the-counter solution: designed for scale, optimized for tolerance, and engineered to deliver average outcomes.

The MLD Wealth Approach

MLD Core Fund is tactical, not a “set it and forget it” approach. The objective is long-term growth and income through tactical allocation, with a focus on positive returns and risk control.

Most balanced funds rely on a fixed 60% equity / 40% fixed income allocation, letting markets determine results within that static mix. MLD Core actively manages risk by shifting exposure away from weaker areas and toward stronger opportunities, with the ability to adjust positioning as conditions change rather than remaining tied to a preset structure, while always adhering to the guardrails of a balanced fund.

Generic balanced funds diversify risk.

MLD Core manages risk.

Category Leadership, In Context

In 2025, MLD Core was the #1 performing Tactical Balanced fund in Canada, as measured by Morningstar. MLD Core Fund ranked #1 for both one-year and year-to-date performance within a peer set of ~300 Tactical Balanced funds as of Dec 31, 2025.

The fund offers daily liquidity and a structure familiar to investors who typically allocate 60/40-style portfolios. The differentiation comes from active, tactical decision-making, not leverage or illiquidity.

Discipline, Applied Over Time

MLD Core is built on the principle that capital should be deployed with intent. Portfolio decisions follow a defined, observable process designed to adapt as conditions change, rather than remain anchored to static allocations. Over full market cycles, time tends to reward discipline applied consistently and without compromise.
